Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. Every nation must now develop an overriding loyalty to mankind as a whole in order to preserve the best in their individual societies. We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right. Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. I oppose violence because the good it does is temporary; the evil it does is permanent. I have a dream. We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. The time is always right to do what is right. We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness. With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice. We are determined here in Montgomery to work and fight until justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend. The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. |
