War of the Lombard League

The War of the Lombard League was a 12th–13th century conflict in northern Italy in which a coalition of Italian city-states, backed by the papacy, resisted the attempts of the Holy Roman Emperors—especially Frederick I Barbarossa—to assert imperial control over the region.
